Not Every Workshop Needs a $50,000 Laser: A Buyer's Guide from Someone Who's Ordered Both

- Don't cut corners on support. The machine is a long-term asset. A supplier who offers on-site training and a service contract is worth the premium. I learned this the hard way when a $40,000 cutter sat idle for two weeks waiting for a technician.
- Verify the laser welding parameters. Every material and thickness has optimal settings. A good vendor will provide a starting parameters chart. If they can't, that's a red flag.

You'll be drowning in setup costs and underutilizing the machine. Conversely, if you're a fabrication shop, don't buy a desktop diode laser and expect it to cut steel. It won't.
Small orders are not a sign of a bad customer. They're a sign of a potential long-term partner.
